Hear us out, what if your last hair removal session could actually be your last?
The morning ritual begins, razor in hand, you stare at your reflection, already dreading the inevitable shadow that will emerge by evening. Sound familiar? Whether it’s the daily shave, the monthly laser appointment that promises permanent reduction (but delivers endless maintenance), or the endless cycle of waxing and threading appointments that leave you broke and still battling regrowth, the hair removal ritual can feel like a permanent prank.
But what if there was a way to win this war once and for all? Enter electrolysis. A method that’s been quietly changing the hair removal game, while many of us have been distracted by the flashier promises of newer technologies.
What is electrolysis?
Unlike its more popular counterparts, electrolysis is a precision-based hair removal method that targets individual hair follicles with a tiny probe and electrical current. While laser relies on pigment to detect and damage hair, electrolysis works differently, it physically destroys the growth cells within each follicle, making regrowth impossible.
“What I love about electrolysis is that it’s the only FDA-approved method of permanent hair removal,” explains Mariela Marcantetti, founder & CEO of The Furless Group. “Shaving grows back within a day, and laser only reduces or slows regrowth: you end up in a cycle of maintenance. Electrolysis is different because it treats each hair follicle at the root and works on all hair colours and skin tones. Once a follicle is treated, it can never produce hair again.” This FDA approval represents decades of clinical evidence proving electrolysis delivers true permanence rather than temporary reduction.
The science behind it
The magic happens at a microscopic level. “Think of it like this: Laser works on pigment. So if the unwanted hair is very fine, blonde, white, or grey, laser often cannot detect it,” Marcantetti explains. “For electrolysis, it doesn’t rely on pigment. Instead, we insert a tiny blunt probe (about a tenth the size of a needle) into the follicle and deliver a small current of heat that destroys the growth cells. Around 70–90% of follicles treated in each session will never grow back.” The process is methodical and thorough. “Electrolysis is precise, safe, and works on every skin tone and every hair colour,” Marcantetti emphasises, addressing one of laser’s biggest limitations regarding its inability to effectively treat light-coloured hair or work consistently across all skin tones.
A lifeline for PCOS and hormonal challenges
For women dealing with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or other hormonal imbalances, hair removal isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about reclaiming confidence and breaking free from a cycle of daily maintenance that can feel overwhelming. “We see so many women with PCOS or hormonal imbalances who are understandably frustrated,” Marcantetti shares. “They’ve invested in laser sessions that require maintenance only for the hair to keep returning. Electrolysis gives people with PCOS or hormonal imbalances hope because it truly works on every type and colour of hair, permanently treating each follicle.” This makes it particularly valuable for those who have found other methods disappointing or inconsistent.
Debunking the myths
Despite its proven track record, electrolysis battles several persistent misconceptions that keep people from considering it as an option. “People often think that electrolysis is outdated, but the reality is that it’s the gold standard,” Marcantetti clarifies. Far from being a relic of the past, modern electrolysis has evolved significantly with technological advances. These myths often stem from outdated information or experiences with older equipment and techniques. Safety concerns also need addressing. “Another misconception is that it leaves scars, which simply isn’t true when it’s done by trained professionals,” Marcantetti explains, emphasising the importance of choosing qualified practitioners.
What does it actually feel like?
Let’s address the elephant in the room: does it hurt? “People worry about pain. In truth, you don’t feel the probe being inserted at all. It’s smaller than the follicle. What you feel is a quick flash of heat,” Marcantetti explains. The sensation is manageable for most clients. “People describe it as a little sting or a mosquito bite. It’s slightly uncomfortable for a moment, but very manageable,” she continues. Modern clinics have multiple strategies for managing discomfort. “For sensitive areas like the face or bikini line, numbing cream can be used, but most clients manage perfectly well without,” Marcantetti notes.
Post-treatment effects are minimal, “Afterwards, you may see slight redness, but it fades quickly,” Marcantetti explains. Advanced clinics offer additional comfort measures, “we adjust settings, use cooling gels, or numbing creams when needed to keep clients comfortable. We also offer ‘cataphoresis’ as a post-treatment which helps to reduce any redness or swelling and encourages the pores to tighten.”
Setting realistic expectations
Unlike the instant gratification of shaving or the quick sessions of laser, electrolysis requires patience and commitment. “At Furless Permanent, we take this very seriously,” Marcantetti emphasises. “Every new client goes through a consultation where we explain the process in detail and they are required to watch a video to visually understand the treatment, pre care and after care, followed by an assessment with one of our expert therapists.”
The individualised approach is crucial because no two cases are identical. “Someone who has had laser before on their armpit may need fewer sessions than someone with PCOS who shaves their chin daily,” Marcantetti explains. “That’s why we offer free consultations: we want clients to understand it’s a commitment, but once it’s done, the results are forever. No more maintenance, no more worry.” To help clients understand what they’re signing up for, many clinics offer trial sessions. “We always encourage new clients to book a 15-minute discovery session after their consultation. That way, clients know exactly what to expect,” Marcantetti recommends.
Choosing the right clinic (or center)
Not all electrolysis providers are created equal, and choosing the wrong clinic or center can lead to disappointing results or safety concerns. “Always check that your electrologist is certified as it is a highly specialised skill,” Marcantetti advises. “Make sure the clinic you go to uses sterile, single-use probes and follows strict hygiene protocols. Check out Google reviews, and read the fine print before you begin your electrolysis journey.”
Standalone or combination approach?
One of the most strategic aspects of modern hair removal is knowing when to use electrolysis alone versus combining it with other methods. “Both,” responds Marcantetti when asked about standalone versus combination approaches. “Electrolysis complements laser beautifully. Laser can thin out bulk body hair quickly, and then electrolysis steps in to clear the finer, lighter hairs that laser simply can’t target.” This combination approach can be particularly effective for those with mixed hair types or large treatment areas. However, electrolysis also shines as a solo solution. “At the same time, electrolysis is also the perfect standalone solution if you’re ready to commit to removing unwanted hair for good,” Marcantetti explains. For facial hair, the recommendation is clear. “Electrolysis only is specifically best for the face as there is a chance of regrowth,” Marcantetti notes. “It really is the final word, because it’s the only truly permanent hair removal method in the world.”
The investment that pays off
While electrolysis requires a significant upfront investment of both time and money, the long-term value proposition is compelling. The psychological benefits extend far beyond the physical results. For people dealing with hormonal hair growth, electrolysis represents freedom from the daily anxiety and time consumption of managing unwanted hair.
